Classes at SEWN Studio are led by designer and seamstress, Rachel Rector, in downtown Gainesville, Florida.
Rachel moved to Gainesville in 2006 to study Art History at the University of Florida. After graduating, she launched an online vintage boutique, Red Lips Vintage, and began learning to sew by reconstructing garments from estate sales and thrift stores. She then moved to Portland, Oregon, where she studied apparel construction & patternmaking at the Portland Fashion Institute. She interned at Colette Patterns, Elizabeth Dye and Tani Thompson. She became obsessed with high-end lingerie and independent designers while working at Lille Boutique and began making panties, bras, and bodysuits out of her bedroom. In 2013, Rachel won Portland Fashion Week's Emerging Designer Contest and debuted a 10-piece lingerie collection under the name, RR Lingerie, for a crowd of nine-hundred.
Rachel packed up her studio and relocated to Brooklyn, New York to pursue lingerie design. With the help of over 140 generous supporters, she ran a viral Amelie-inspired crowdfunding campaign to manufacture RR Lingerie at a family-owned factory in New York. In summer 2015, Rachel acted as the Designer-in-Residence at Birdie's Panties in Kansas City, Missouri.
Rachel has shown collections at Portland Fashion Week, Unmentionable: A Lingerie Exhibition, West 18th Street Fashion Show, and Pride Awareness Month Fashion Show.
Inspired by the dream to build a community of sewists and fashion designers in her beloved Gainesville, Rachel began offering sewing lessons out of her studio in 2016. Her favorite garments to sew are swimwear, dancewear, and lingerie. When she isn't at SEWN or exploring nature, Rachel works as the Production Leader at Girl & A Serious Dream.
